在 Hacker News 阅读原文…n particular if you pay attention while chewing you realize that the pre-processed chicken doesn't have a lot of internal texture than the home cooked chicken does. Read The End of Overeating for more details.
在 Hacker News 阅读原文I was referring to concepts presented in "The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite" by David Kessler. Of course, I wouldn't expect a lot of people on HN to agree, thus the down-votes. A lot of the food industry is based on pumping the salt, sugar and fat so that we eat/buy more. So people focused on making money are more likely to side with Taubes (even if he's wrong) than with Kessler. If I could down vote this thread, I would.
在 Hacker News 阅读原文…well enforced because of how much outrage people have over being told to pay extra because of their weight. (A condition which most people have little control over. Read The End of Overeating for the biochemistry behind how the modern food industry induces overeating.) Personally I would be in favour of a surcharge on anyone who significantly inconveniences their seatmate, with a fraction of said surcharge paid directly to the inconvenienced fellow passenger. I think that this would increase politeness, and where it doesn't, the financial bonus would reduce my frustration level.
在 Hacker News 阅读原文I have to second this recommendation. Everybody concerned about nutrition should read * Good Calorie, Bad Calorie; * The Omnivore's Dilemma * The End of Overeating. In order: the science of fat and weight, as best as can be explained today; what's in your food, and what you should be eating; and how companies influence your eating decisions and how to take control of them. In particular, the last book summarizes research showing that, for certain people, there is a reward conditioning feedback mechanism in the brain triggered by the intake of fat, sugar, and salt. see http://www.boingboing.net/2009/05/07/end-of-overeating-th.ht... for a longer review. In particular, if you have lots of willpower elsewhere in your life but struggle controlling your food intake, I can't recommend this book strongly enough. In any case, I think everybody sho…

在 Hacker News 阅读原文…damn run already. You'll be happier for it. If you're not managing your appetite, work on that—exercise will not help you lose weight until you do. There's a great book— The End Of Overeating —which details the intersection of modern food science, evolutionary psychology, cognitive psychology, and human physiology. If you're interested, give it a go. (BTW, bringing up elite athletes doesn't help the discussion—elite athletes regularly have 1.5-2 times the VO² max of even extremely fit people. Hell, five-time Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain could circulate 7L of oxygenated blood per minute compared with the 5-6L of his competitors and 3-4L for the fitter of us regular people. Human physiology has a statistical distribution, and bringing up people many standard deviations from the mean doesn't help any of us regular schmucks. My mutan…
在 Hacker News 阅读原文Or just eat less. To quote former FDA commissioner David Kessler from the book I just read (and the impetus for this post), The End of Overeating, “People get fat because they eat more than people who are lean…we finally have strong evidence that weight gain is primarily due to overeating.” Period. This has been conventional wisdom for years now. Everything else is just details, though people love to obsess about the details, because "eat less" doesn't provide the same level of excitement and optimism as "eat this freaky diet." Even the theory behind most of the low carb diets is that avoiding high-glycemic-index foods smooths out your insulin levels, which helps regulate your appetite, which helps you avoid overeating. Likewise, exercise is a big help for me in eating less, because it improves my mood, which makes it easier for me not to…
