…Charge Don't remember the author, but she reinforces the point that most small businesses are undercharging for their product/service and shows how to solve the problem. The E-Myth Revisited kinda starts where the above one ends in that it points out the tragic flaw in many entrepreneurs: they want to practice their "craft" to the detriment of the actual business. Growing A Business my copy of this disappeared over 10 years ago, but I still consider it one of the most important business books I've ever read. And pick up one of the many editions of The Portable MBA at a used bookstore. Good, basic foundations in Finance, Accounting, Marketing and HR.

…at are good books by smart guys with good ideas - just that the ideas are really something that could be summed up in a few pages. I would second the recommendation for 'Growing a Business' and 'Founders at Work', which is impossible to really summarize because it's full of interviews.

I found out about Growing a Business on HN, loved it, recommend it w/o reservation. For a similar but more hard-headed perspective, I also liked Norm Brodsky's "The Knack". I started doubting this list as soon as I saw Guy Kawasaki on it.

"Growing a Business" by Paul Hawken - hands down one of the best books on starting a business I have read. Don't let yourself be scared away by the release date 1988, the advice in there is timeless. Lots of the author's advice can still be found in other books on that topic. http://www.amazon.com/Growing-Business-Paul-Hawken/dp/067167... You might also think the title sounds "treehuggerish", I found the book not to be like that at all but very inspiring and useful.

… might be considered annoying, but I guess only the people involved can say that with certainty, and apparently they didn't tell you to lay off. BTW, ever read the book 'Growing a Business'? It's one of my favorite business books; it's about a mail-order garden tool business (which is what triggered the association). http://www.squeezedbooks.com/book/show/4/growing-a-business It probably doesn't have a lot in it that you don't already know, but it's a nice one if you can get ahold of a used copy or from the library.

… and maybe discussing. We can have a conversation right away, and there's still knowledge and insight to be gained. Here are some non-technical books I'd like to read: * How to Read a Book - http://amazon.com/dp/0671212095 * Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion - http://amazon.com/dp/006124189X * Liar's Poker - http://amazon.com/dp/0140143459 * Growing a Business - http://amazon.com/dp/0671671642

… it to know what it's about". If you're smart, you'll appreciate even more the work of someone you hire who is truly talented in the given field. A bit I wrote down from Growing a Business: "Be a hands-on learner, and get involved with all aspects of your business, so that you know exactly how they work down to the details." http://www.squeezedbooks.com/book/show/4/growing-a-business Which is a good book - it's like "getting real", but an actual, real, published book with an ISBN number, rather than a "let's see how many pdf's we can sell to our followers before we release it for free" type of deal.
